Racers of the Bear Mountain Trail Challenge can expect varied, difficult terrain, including rolling hills and plenty of technical footing with plenty of tree cover overhead.
Some sections will be rocky, rooted, and covered in leaves, while other sections will be a bit more open and runnable. While there are no huge climbs, racers can expect to be ascending or descending more or less constantly.Expect mud slippery rocks, and occasional stream crossings.
This course will reward the strongest, most versatile trail runners!

*Please note that once the first 10k heat is full, we will open more spots on the 9:15 heat. This is a requirement from Bear Mountain State Park, in order to keep our runners safer and have a better organized event.
The top 3 males and females overall for each distance as well as the top 3 males and females in each 6 age groups will receive awards during a podium ceremony after the race.
Runners must be present at the awards ceremony to receive their award – awards will not be mailed.
Age groups are as follows: 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+.
There’s no onsite parking available for runners on Bear Mountain State Park (race start/finish area).
Parking area for runners will be at Anthony Wayne Recreation area (same place as shuttle departure and arrival). Be sure to arrive with spare time and be ready to jump on the shuttle with your race equipment. There is a bag check at the start and finish area.
All racers are required to ride the free shuttle from Anthony Wayne Recreation Area to the start/finish area. The ride takes approximately 10 minutes. The first shuttle will depart Anthony Wayne at 5:30 a.m., and shuttles will run every 10-20 minutes. From the finish line back to Anthony Wayne, shuttles will operate on an ongoing basis throughout the day until the last racer finishes. There’s a bag check at the start and finish area.
Intermediate race cut-offs are safety-based and will be indicated by race staff and volunteers. We will soon upload the athlete’s guide with detailed information on cutoffs.
